In 2017 or so, I began in earnest the making of Art Books. This one is now in the permanent collection of the Nelson Atkins local artists section. This is a full color reproduction of the book itself, in amazing detail and quality. Each page is printed edge-to-edge of the exact original, in order to keep the print as true to the original as possible.
The interesting thing about art books is that every mark is permanent. There is no going back when you are making something of such magnitude. Each book generally takes about a year of work. One must keep in mind a cohesive theme across a long period, consistent color and mark, and unifying elements which survive the test of time.
This particular book is my celebration of women, the art within explores the feminine experience in broad strokes. The hemp twine you can see on the cover emulates hair, the quintessential characteristic of so many women. The hemp is tied into many of the pages of the book, and knotted along each strand's length. This causes a person leafing through the book to have to carefully comb and gently guide the hair from side to side as one turns the pages. Of course, in the reproduction, you only get the gist of that process. I made sure when photographing that the twine still plays an integral role in the image.
